VIRTUALAISATION AND HIGH AVAILABILITY SERVER INFRASTRUCTURE

Operating nationally out of three northwest offices, their growth plan is ambitious, with established credentials in ever increasingly diverse sectors and skills. Covering growth sectors, such as power & power generation, but still servicing their core markets in engineering, construction, manufacturing and logistics. In early 2011, Russell Taylor gained ISO 9001 accreditation for quality, and is currently working towards accreditation in its health & safety and environmental systems.
They required a new upgraded infrastructure to support this growth that provided security, resilience, speed of access and high availability.
Having such an extensive area of services, their requirements for accessibility and availability were extremely high and have been systematically growing. The Microsoft Small Business based network implemented in Russell Taylor was outdated, they required a complete refresh. That is why we proposed a scalable High Availability infrastructure.
The best solution
The new solution was to provide high availability, scalability and flexibility. Thus, suggesting using a virtualized infrastructure based on VMware vSphere, all implemented on HP server and SAN hardware and Netgear 10Gb switches.
Both servers consist of Intel® Xeon® E5 series systems with Intel server technology and high RAM capacity as well as 10GbE interface cards. The risk of hardware failures or downtimes has been reduced to minimum thanks to VMware High Availability and the vMotion feature.
When it comes to hardware setup, Russell Taylor uses two servers with failover clusters in active-active mode, as well as two VMware ESX hosts on HP hardware while the connection of all systems is based on 1Gb / 10Gb network cards and redundant copper switches.
Such benefits provided by Active-Active setup makes it ideal for demanding virtualization environments, database applications or video surveillance systems. Among other criteria, those environments require:
- Optimal speed for data processing (both read and write)
- Maximum utilisation of the storage space
- Storage overload prevention
- No single point of failure
